On-the-Road RV Hobbies

Hobbies are your own personal slice of freedom in your busy schedule. It’s that special time you take just for you to recharge your batteries by doing something you love. Spend your downtime in your Reines RV with a new hobby. This will not only reduce your overall stress, but it will make you excited about the day again. Here are some great hobbies to take into consideration while traveling on the road.

For those who are skilled with their hands, learning needlework is not only a great hobby but it’s also a lifelong skill. By learning different sewing stitches in needleworking, you will be able to embroider, cross stitch, crochet and take on many other different projects. You can also save the day by sewing on a popped button or even repair a torn shirt or pants while on the road. You can make custom pillows for your RV or even a quilt for colder fall nights. The options are endless with this hobby.

Geocaching is for the tech savvy crew. We’ve all heard of it but what exactly is it and why would it make a great hobby? The best part of traveling the open road is the freedom to explore new and exciting places. Geocaching combines the love for the outdoors with technical gadgets and the thrill of the hunt. It’s a worldwide treasure search that uses satellites to find hidden containers called “geocaches”. Many geocaches are specially designed to take you to hidden places that people have never been before. Some even have a history lesson behind the hidden cache. The cache can range from all kinds of shapes, sizes and camouflages. Once the cache is found, there are usually small trinkets that can be traded as well as a logbook to sign.

Reading is one of the greatest hobbies of all. There are many gadgets available that will allow you to take hundreds of books with you on the road in one easy to read handheld device. There are tablets and smartphones which will allow you to download your favorites and to find new ones. As George R.R. Martin once wrote in Dance with Dragons, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”

No matter what hobbies you end up diving into, remember to enjoy them!

National Hot Dog Day Recipes

Today is National Hot Dog Day! Hot dogs are a classic must-have for cookouts and barbecues. Anytime there’s a party, the two main staples are hot dogs and hamburgers. Even so, there are lots of variations of this wonderfully delicious food item. Here are a few different ways you can dress them up.

Vietnamese Hot Dog

  • 4 hot dogs
  • ¼ cup Miracle Whip
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 1 small cucumber sliced thinly
  • 1 large carrot shredded
  • Mint leaves for garnish

Cook the hot dogs either over your campfire or on your Manassas RV grill. In a small bowl, mix together the Miracle Whip, sugar and Sriracha. Place the cooked hot dogs in buns and divide the sauce mixture evenly along with the carrot, cucumber and mint for garnish.

Steak House Dog

  • 4 hot dogs
  • 2 big, plump tomatoes, sliced
  • ¼ white onion, sliced thinly
  • ¼ cup A1 steak sauce

Grill the hot dogs until golden brown or to your preferred liking. Once done, place each hot dog in a bun and add the tomatoes, onions, and finish it off with A1 steak sauce. This is one recipe you will want to make all the time.

The Ultimate Guacamole Dog

  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 4 romaine lettuce leaves
  • ¼ red onion, finely chopped
  • Texas Pete hot sauce

Theses hot dogs taste great when boiled. Boil them until they get big and plump. Once cooked, lay them out on a paper towel. Next in a medium bowl, mash your avocado with a fork and add the lime juice and ¼ teaspoon of both pepper and salt. Place a piece of lettuce in the bun then add one of the boiled hot dogs, some of the avocado mixture and chopped onion. Drizzle over it with Texas Pete hot sauce and serve.

Cuban Hot Dog

  • 4 thin slices of deli ham
  • 4 slices of deli Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup of sliced dill pickles
  • ¼ cup of Dijon mustard

Heat the grill to medium-high heat and start cooking the hot dogs. To the buns, and add one slice of ham and one slice of cheese and place on the grill. Cover grill and cook until the cheese has melted, this takes about 1 to 2 minutes. Once melted, remove from grill and place the grilled wiener in the bun. Add pickles and Dijon mustard and enjoy. Tips for Fulltiming

Are you thinking about becoming a full-time RVer? More and more people are living in a recreational vehicle each year and are loving it. The RV lifestyle is a wonderful lifestyle full of adventure and excitement. However, this isn’t the life for everyone. There are things you need to know before you make this life changing choice. Here are some tips to consider before venturing out.

Don’t sell everything quite yet. We know you are eager to purchase your Manassas RV and take on the world. Many RVers who are already full-time recommend that you take a few practice trips first before liquidating everything and heading out. By taking a few practice trips, you can familiarize yourself with your rig and get used to traveling the open road. Do your research on which RV best suits your needs. RVs come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes, colors and amenities. Walk through many RVs before you decide.

Get rid of any excess. There is only so much space in your new home on wheels. Take time and decide which items you really need and which would be better to give away or donate. There is a mantra called “in with the new and out with the old.” For example you don’t need a giant clunky TV and stand. Instead purchase a smaller flat screen that can mount to the wall of your RV. You don’t need your desktop computer either. Instead, invest in a slim high quality laptop.

Get your passes in order before you head out. You will be visiting many attractions as well as campgrounds and different RV parks. By obtaining a National or State Park pass where you’re heading, you will be saving money ahead of time. Also, if it applies, AARP and AAA offer you discounts on thousands of attractions so make sure to do your research.

You can still make money while traveling. If you have a hobby making crafts, you can supplement your income by selling a few projects. There are also many work camping jobs available all over the United States. Some places will trade out a few days of work for free hooks ups as well as amenities. If you’re lucky and want to stay longterm, some campgrounds will even pay you as well as give you a free site to stay in. If you decide that full-timing is right for you, come see us at Reines RV for all your preparation needs.

We know that there are certain things that you can put off but some of these items will be a real help this summer in your Reines RV.

Assateague Island National Seashore

A real treasure to mark off on your bucket list is the Assateague Island National Seashore. If you have been looking for a new place to try this year for summer vacation, this is it. This beautiful island is a hidden treasure for sure and would be enjoyed by both adults and children alike. It is located just off of Maryland’s eastern shoreline and the park covers over 41,320 acres and is managed by three park agencies.

The Assateague Island National Seashore is rated high for destination vacations. In total, Assateague Island has over 37 miles of stretching beautiful beach to explore. Visitors can enjoy sightseeing, kayak tours, bird watching, fishing, biking and more. All of these wonderful activities makes this a vacationer’s paradise come true. It has been called one of the best beaches to visit on the East Coast.

Oh, and did we mention wild horses?

The many wild horses of Assateague Island are well known. There are extremely limited places to view wild horses within the United States so take advantage of this rare opportunity. Though a wonder to behold, Reines RV wants to remind you that they are still wild animals so feeding and petting are both detrimental to you and them. Horses can become ill from human food so please do not feed them. Visitors can be kicked or even knocked down so use caution as you would with any wild animal. Look but don’t touch. With summertime here, it is the perfect chance for photo opportunities of catching the endless shorelines as well as wild horses in just one shot.

If you plan on doing some tent or RV camping, here are a few tips. Make sure to put your food up when not around. Wild horses will eat your food just like any other wild animal. Bring long tent stakes to help anchor down tents in strong wind and sand. Bring extra sunscreen and plenty of bug spray. Be prepared to admire the beautiful starry night skies. You are able to see more of the night sky here due to lack of pollution from city lights. Camping areas are provided with a fire ring and grill top, a picnic table as well as a spot to set your tent up. This is one camping experience you will not want to pass up with your Manassas RV.

July Fourth Dessert Recipes

The Fourth of July is an exciting holiday centered around our country’s freedom. How we celebrate is with cookouts and fireworks. Since food is half the fun, you may be wondering what you can make for a great dessert that everyone will love. If you want something festive this year, be a hit with these two holiday favorites. Both can be made from your Manassas RV.

Patriotic Red White and Blue S’mores

  • One bag of campfire size marshmallows
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • Graham Crackers
  • One bag or bar of White chocolate Ghirardelli squares

Add a few drops of the red food coloring into one small bowl and add a teaspoon of water. Lightly churn to combine. Repeat this same process with the blue food coloring. Cover the area you plan to work on with tin foil followed by a layer of paper towels. Place both bowls on the tin foil and open the bag of marshmallows. Dip one side of the marshmallow into the red food coloring. Remove and lay on paper towel to dry for 5-10 minutes. Once dry, repeat the same action with the other side, only this time dipping the marshmallow into the blue food coloring. Once completed, slide them onto roasting skewers and grill your Patriotic S’mores to perfection. Remove from flame, slide onto graham cracker and chocolate, smoosh down and enjoy.

Washington’s Parfaits

  • 1 Package of red Jell-O
  • 1 Package of blue Jell-O
  • 1 Container of cool whipped topping, thawed

Start this dessert by boiling two cups of water. Open the gelation packets and place the two colors into two separate large bowls. Once the water is boiled, stir in 1 cup of hot water into each color of gelatin for 2 minutes. Once completely mixed, stir in 1 cup of cold water into each bowl and stir again, mixing everything together. Pour the gelation into 2 separate 8-inch square pans. Refrigerate up to 5 hours or until firm. When set, slice each gelatin pan into ½-inch cubes. Grab your Parfait cups and start layering the colors. Start with red jello cubes followed by cool whipped topping and finish with the blue jello cubes on top.

We hope you have a fun, safe and happy Fourth of July from your friends at Reines RV.

July Events

The month of July is a special time of year for every American. The month almost begins with the day we show the world how proud we are to be independent and free. We take a moment to honor those that made America what it is today and we do that with fireworks, cookouts and gatherings. Even though July 4th is the major holiday in the month, there are a lot of other great events going on as well near Reines RV.

One of the largest firework displays in Virginia is held on the 4th in Manassas. It’s an All-American sand party held in Old Town Manassas and sponsored by the city. Bring your best lawn chairs and blankets and get ready for the show. There will be nonstop live entertainment starting at 4PM throughout the streets of the Old Town train depot, the Manassas Museum and Harris Pavilion. The games and rides start up at 3PM so get there early. There will also be great food and concessions as well as the red, white and blue hayride.

But that’s not all. If your passion is for baking, you might have what it takes to take home the blue ribbon for the best Apple Pie Baking Contest. Have fun competing with your neighbors for a $100 gift card to downtown Manassas. Second place wins $75, and third is $50.

Get your kids in on the celebration and sign up to be a part of the Chilren’s Bicycle Rodeo. This is your children’s chance to show their American Red White and Blue colors by decorating their bicycles. Prizes will be given out for the best decorated bike.

Want to see if your dad can win first prize in this year’s watermelon eating contest? Of course you do and taking plenty of pictures is a must.
