One of the great parts of traveling in motor homes and travel trailers is creating meals with recipes that may be a bit different than you may use at home. If you are going to try to minimize your intake of red meat while on the road this summer, here’s a little recipe that is easy to fix, and has a nice distinctive flavor. You can cook them inside your RV or outside on a grill. Here is a recipe for Sweet Turkey Burgers with grilled onions.
You will ultimately be creating two to four turkey burgers that will be basted in a sweet sauce, and ultimately topped with grilled onions.
1 lb of ground turkey
2 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons of A-1 Steak Sauce
¾ cup sugar
1 large Vidalia or sweet onion
Salt and pepper
Put the ground turkey in a bowl and mix in the Worcestershire sauce, egg and some salt and pepper. Once mixed, mold the mixture into burger patties. It will make two very large burgers or three or four smaller ones.
Create a basting sauce by putting the A-1 Steak Sauce in a small bowl and stirring in the sugar under you have a thick sauce.
Peel the onion and cut into medium slices. If you are cooking indoors, put a little olive oil in a pan, and grill the onion slices with salt and pepper until they are separated and caramelized to taste. If cooking on a grill, place foil on part of the grill, place the onion slices on the foil and sprinkle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Grill the onions by turning them over until they separate and are grilled to your taste.
Cook the turkey burgers as you would hamburgers, but begin basting them with the A-1 Steak Sauce mixture after about half-way thru the cooking process. This will create a little bit of a sweet crust on the outside of the burgers, while keeping the distinctive A-1 Sauce flavor.
Plate the burgers when done, and top them with a heaping helping of grilled onions. Drizzle any leftover sauce mixture over the onion covered burgers. Serve with your favorite sides like macaroni or potato salad and a vegetable.
Start to finish the meal can be prepared and served in 45 minutes, and even less time if you create and freeze your turkey burgers patties in advance. For an open faced sandwich, place a piece of rye bread on the plate and then top it with the burger and onions.
